26th February 2026:

The Western Sydney Tourism Taskforce has released its landmark

report, Greater Western Sydney Unlocked, a comprehensive analysis of tourism

infrastructure, accommodation supply, event capacity, and transport connectivity across

13 LGAs in Greater Western Sydney.

The report comes at a pivotal moment as the region experiences rapid population growth, major

cultural investment, improved transport links, and prepares for the opening of Western Sydney

International (WSI) Airport later this year. It provides new data on hotel room supply,

business-event capacity, and regional accessibility to support the NSW Government’s Visitor

Economy Strategy 2034.

Developed as a strategic resource for investors, operators, venue owners, and policymakers,

the report includes stakeholder engagement and insights gathered from hotel groups, major

clubs, and business leaders across the region. Stakeholders cited high construction costs, land

values, and the current $200M hotel investment IDA threshold as key barriers holding back

development.

Reports Key findings include:

  • Tourism and accommodation analysis across 13 Greater Western Sydney LGAs

  • Current and future hotel room supply and pipeline with 8,773 hotel rooms across 113

properties with more than 2,000 hotel rooms in the pipeline

  • Business-events capacity of 53,565+ delegate places across conference and event

    venues

  • Connectivity to two Sydney Airports from each LGA

The report also features the first region-wide comparison of drive times to both airports,

highlighting travel time reductions for key LGAs supported by new Sydney Metro lines and

expanded bus networks.

Fazila Farhad, Chair of the Western Sydney Tourism Taskforce, said:

“Greater Western Sydney is one of Australia’s fastest-growing regions. We are proud to

present this comprehensive report, which provides a roadmap for the next stage of

Western Sydney’s evolution with the opening of WSI Airport. Our region has a once-in-a

generation opportunity to become a global gateway. Now is the moment to invest,

promote, and elevate Western Sydney on the world stage”.
